Animal Assisted Therapy

Submit Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) sites about programs that provide support for patients and shut-ins through visits by selected and trained animals and their handlers. Also submit Animal Assisted Activity (AAA) sites about physical therapy through interaction with specially trained animals. This category does not include Service Animals (such as Guide Dogs) or Theraputic Riding for the Handicapped.

By Region

Cats

Non-English language sites should be submitted to the corresponding subcat in World.

This category is for general pet discussions only.

Breed-specific discussion sites should be submitted at the breed level. (for example - Border Collie discussion sites should be submitted to Recreation/Pets/Dogs/Breeds/Herding_Group/Border_Collie/Chats_and_Forums/ ) If there is not an existing Chats and Forums category, then submit to the specific breed.

Species specific sites should be submitted at the species level. (for example, general dog discussion groups should be submitted to Recreation/Pets/Dogs/Chats_and_Forums/ )

For newsgroups and message boards that discuss pet concerns regarding all species.

Contests

This is where you list your site if you offer a photo contest for pets.

Dogs

Only submit sites to this category which provide very broad information about dogs.

If your site is about your breeding operation, your purebred pet, a purebred breed-specific rescue service or a single-breed club, please find your breed in Recreation/Pets/Dogs/Breeds.

Submit your site to the Breeders, Pets, Rescue or Pets subcategory of that breed's category. [some more unusual breeds do not yet have such subcategories; submit your site to that breed's main category].

If you are selling a product, do not submit your site to Recreation/Pets/Dogs. It will not be listed here. All such sites are listed in Shopping/Pets/Dogs.

If you have a boarding kennel, grooming, training or pet sitting service, please submit your site to the proper locality in Regional. Your site will not be listed in Recreation/Pets/Dogs.

Exotic

If your site is about a specific pet, please make sure it does not have a category before submitting it here.

If your site focuses on online sales, please submit it to Shopping: Pets: Exotic or a more appropriate category under Shopping: Pets.

Websites about uncommon and unusual pets.

The term "exotic pet" has several meanings:

an animal that cannot be owned without a permit
an endangered species that cannot be legally owned
a non-domesticated animal that cannot be truly tamed
an uncommon pet that does not fall under any of the criteria above

When considering an exotic pet, it is very important to find out about the legality of owning the animal, its specific care-taking needs, the availability of veterinary care in your area, and the changing behavior and needs of the animal as it matures.

Ferrets

Please submit sites that discuss ferrets as pets. Sites discussing ferrets from a biological or scientific standpoint should be submitted to Science/Biology/Zoology/Chordates/Mammals/Mustelids and sites discussing ferrets kept for hunting purposes should be submitted to Recreation/Outdoors/Hunting/Ferreting.

Ferrets belong to the family Mustelidae and are related to polecats, weasels, skunks, and otters. Modern domestic ferrets have no natural habitat and cannot survive in the wild. They were bred centuries ago for pest control, and are still used today in some areas to hunt rabbits, rats, or other small animals. They are also increasingly popular as household pets and are known for their playfulness and curiosity.

1. Before you submit your site, look for a subcategory. Information about this hobby is often very specialized; submitting your site to the proper subcategory will help your information reach the right people. It's also easier on the editors and may result in your site being listed faster.

2. If you are selling a particular product or product line, or are running a site of which the main function is product sales _do not_ submit here. Submit to Shopping/Pets/Fish instead. Submitting here *will not* get your site listed in this category, and repeatedly submitting to this branch of the directory may result in your site being removed altogether.

Directory sites should have a substantial number of listings to be considered for an ODP listing. When a site has, say, two or three petsitters for all of Texas, then the site isn't going to be listable.
